Started in 2001, the Dot NAME universal domain name extension is the sole TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level names remained running.
